NCAT CREATE OPENS AN EXCITING NEW CHAPTER!

It is with great excitement that we announce that NCAT Create is now offering a Diploma of Visual Arts! 

NCAT Create students have long wished that the course could run across two years. At the end of their year with us they very often felt that they wanted more time to extend specialised skills in order to further prepare for life as visual artists. This meant they often went on to complete Visual Arts Diplomas elsewhere (whilst lamenting that they could not be at Create). 

We listened and we acted. As of 2020, the course will run as a two-year, part-time course, after which students will attain the CUA51115 Diploma of Visual Arts. This will enable them to explore skills, techniques and ideas in the first year and then extend, refine and specialise in the second year! As previously, the course will run on Thursdays and Fridays with an optional open studio access day on Tuesdays. This enables mature aged students access to employment and other commitments whilst studying. Course hours remain family friendly: 9:30am - 3pm.

NCAT is a Registered Training Organisation 6736. All trainers are qualified to deliver this qualification. Students may be eligible for a government subsidised position through Skills First funding and can access a VET Student Loan if required.

NCAT Folio Preparation provides you with portfolio enhancement and a proven pathway for entry into tertiary courses within the visual arts or design areas or direct employment in the creative industries. It offers you creative skills, confidence and a fine folio.

HOW TO APPLY

You will need to apply directly to NCAT Folio Preparation, not through VTAC. Please note that we are listed in the VTAC Guide though.
We accept applications from mid year onwards. On receiving your application we will contact you to arrange an interview time. We interview students from August onwards. Applications after December will be accepted, however only early applications can be guaranteed a place in the course.
You will be required to bring some creative work to your interview to give us an idea of your existing skills and interests. This could include some evidence of drawing/design/art work or any other supplementary information you regard as creative. 
Applicants to this course MUST have satisfactorily completed the VCE/VCAL senior or if over 21, be able to display equivalency to VCE/VCAL Senior through experience. We understand that you may not have received final VCE/VCAL results on application but be aware that NCAT Folio Preparation course offers are provisional on you successfully gaining your VCE or VCAL Senior qualification.

FOLIO PREPARATION IS DESIGNED TO:

• Provide students with a tailor-made program that suits their individual needs & requirements
• Build student’s confidence and creative maturity
• Improve students’ practical and conceptual skills, and provide them with a substantial body of practical work for Tertiary interview and entrance. 
• Provide detailed careers research and counselling to enable students to make informed choices regarding the multitude of art & design courses and careers on offer
• Introduce students to new media 
• ​​​​​​​Introduce students to the Adobe suite of computer programs including Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Indesign, building their creative computer skills to a proficient level

• Enable mature-aged students seeking a career change to build their practical and conceptual skills and to create a comprehensive portfolio

NCAT CREATE 17 EXHIBITION 'FOUND'

'Found' is an exhibition of work by 2017 graduates of Northern College of Art and Technology's Create course.

Each Create artist brings with them a wealth of previous study, working life and personal experience and this is reflected in the depth and breadth of the work produced.

The 28 artists forming the Create 17 collective have explored feminism, motherhood, health and the human body, Australian landscape and environmental sustainability across a broad range of media. Sitting together in the studio, artists shared stories of searching for home and belonging, in new places, new careers, and in creative communities. The work spans from memories of childhood to recent experiences of mothering, caring for ageing parents and dispatching stereotypes.

The show opened on Friday 9th February 6-9pm at Neon Parlour, a multi-purpose creative space in inner Melbourne's Thornbury. It was opened by NCAT Create Program Leader, Tracy Paterson

EXTENDING THE EXPERIENCE AT NCAT FOLIO PREPARATION

At Folio Preparation, much of the student learning takes place in the classroom, which acts as a simulated workplace. But there is more to learning than being in a classroom.

We encourage our students to get out and about to experience art and design in the wider community. The art students are expected to regularly visit art exhibitions and the design students need to keep abreast of design trends.

In addition to these self directed options, we find it helpful for students to attend events organised by our staff, both on campus and off.

This year we have organised visits to a broad number of art and design locations.

Students have checked out the National Gallery of Victoria - both International and Federation Square galleries, Heide gallery and park, The Abbotsford Convent artist and designer studios and galleries, The Old School New School of Design and Typography (OSNS), Flinders lane Galleries trail, Blindside artist space, RMIT Art departments, Nicholas Building artist studios, Anna Schwartz Gallery to name a few!

Getting out of the studio and into the community inspires students to think differently and put their art and design work into the context of the contemporary creative world.

Art and design should never be created in a bubble!

We also have a highly successful guest speaker program at NCAT.

Students had access to a number of photography based lectures organised by PIC.

Ex students Cameron Schwab and Vicky Novoselski gave amazing presentations, inspiring students with insights into their further study experiences, the interview process, putting their folio together, dealing with the pressures of study and how they produce their creative work. Brilliantly inspiring!

Both courses offer students an opportunity to build creative skills and confidence. All students have access to industry standard equipment and facilities, including apple computers and ipads, the Adobe Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign), purpose built drawing studio, and stimulating creative environment.

Former NCAT Folio Preparation student, Anita Ryley (ne: McArthur) been appointed as the new Vice President of the Australian Graphic Design Association (AGDA). 

Anita completed Folio Preparation back in 1999 (when it was known as NDS) and went on to graduate from RMIT University's Communication Design (Then Graphic Design) in 2002, where she met future Seesaw Studio co-partner, Matthew McKenzie. 

Melbourne's Seesaw Studio, of which Anita is Creative Director & co-partner, has recently won in the Identity-Range of Implementation category for the Flinders Hotel project at the 2012 AGDA Australian Design Biennale. 

As Creative Director, Anita "brings a passion for brand development, collaboration and strategy to Seesaw’s creative solutions. She has been past judge of both the Fairfax Employment Marketing Awards and Brisbane Advertising and Design Club awards". She is also a guest writer for Desktop Mag. 

Seesaw Studio is the brand agency that has overseen the wonderful creative collaboration that is the rebranding of NCAT (Northern College of the Arts & Technology) - from initial concepts to full roll out. It has been an exciting project for us, seeing our former student manage a difficult project with maturity and creative insight. Swapping roles from student to creative director | from teacher to real-life client was inspiring!
