EX-NCAT CREATE STUDENT AYLSA McHUGH'S UPCOMING EXHIBITION

“Nature is painting for us, day after day, pictures of infinite beauty if only we have eyes to see them” - John Ruskin

We are thrilled to announce that 2017 NCAT Create student Aylsa McHugh has an upcoming show of her exquisite collage works 'On a Clear Day' at Neon Parlour. The exhibition will feature new work by Aylsa, alongside works by Daniella Ruffino & Sarah Lynch.

'On a Clear Day' aims to provide a space in which to investigate and ruminate on relationships with external and internal environments. Informed by the cataclysmic and exponential changes happening upon familiar landscapes the artists are interested in the effect these changes have on psychological territory. Aylsa, Daniella and Sarah provide an artistic and historical documentation of what might seem to be viewed but is fundamentally overlooked. Exploring notions of destruction, transformation and regeneration the artists make the familiar strange and the strange awe inspiring.

"Most recently I have been appropriating images found in nature journals, architecture books & fashion magazines to create unsettling and elegant juxtapositions. This series of new work explores our connection and relationship to place and environment. Compelling and perverse, disjointed and harmonious, these assemblages are a celebration of the grotesque and strangely beautiful". Aylsa McHugh.

Aylsa's art works can be found on her Instagram account: @aylsamchugh

NCAT FOLIO PREPARATION GRADUATE SHOW AT NEON PARLOUR

The graduating NCAT Folio Preparation students have worked hard to put together outstanding art and design works for their annual exhibition at Neon Parlour Art Gallery and Studios in Thornbury. It was a wonderful showcase of the students creative work and an opportunity to meet members of the wider NCAT community.

The exhibition couldn’t have happened without our generous Community Arts Grant from the City of Darebin. This grant enabled us to get out into our local hood to give our students a real world taste of all that is involved in putting a large group show together. Thank you!

Big shout outs to:

  • The student's who gave up their precious time to produce beautiful artworks
  • The NCAT staff who championed the cause!

WADE JEFFREE SAYS THANK YOU FOR HIS FOLIO PREP START

Seeing the incredible achievements of our ex students is certainly on of the very best perks of our job as Creative Industries educators. This week International graphic designer (and ex-Folio Prep student), Wade Jeffree treated our art, design and photography students to a wonderful presentation about his amazing creative journey.

After completing Folio Preparation, Wade went on to study Communication Design at Swinburne University. He then travelled to the USA where he landed a dream job with his design hero, the world renowned designer Stefan Sagmeister!
@stefansagmeister.

Wade is now a "New York-based Designer and Art Director whose practice is based upon creating long-standing collaborative partnerships built on honesty and purpose within the fields of art, culture, and commerce. He believes in a life where work and play are forever intertwined". (Reproduced from wadejeffree.com).

Wade and his partner Leta Sobierajski now run their own highly acclaimed graphic design studio from Brooklyn, New York. Selected clients include:Nike, Google, Uniqlo Japan, Refinery 29, AIGA, Bloomberg Businessweek, Digg, Riposte Magazine, Ghostly International Records, IBM, Columbia University, Kiehl’s, The New York Times, Tate Modern, DOTS, Renault, Bjarke Ingels Group, Hawthorns Group, Next Wave Art Festival (Aus), Dumbo Art Improvement District, L’oreal Melbourne Fashion Week, Le Turtle, AARK watches, Odd Pairs, The Designers Foundry and Styles Upon Styles Records.

Wade and Leta have become renowned for their Complements Project. 'Complements explores Leta and Wade’s relationship, as well as the universal strangeness of love, highlighting their individual talents that complement (and compliment!) each other. The project as a whole is sharp, creative, and light-hearted, highlighting a stunning dynamic between the real-life artist couple and their shared passion for unique design'. (Words by Kate Messinger). Five images from the Complements Project are reproduced below.

Wade’s presentation at NCAT was in turn hilarious, humble, honest and totally inspiring. The students were incredibly excited and went away thinking that with desire and hard work, their creative vision can become a reality! Folio Prep Program Leader Tracy Paterson (pictured with Wade) taught Wade Graphic Design and Photo-Imaging at Folio Preparation. She was so happy and proud to have played a small a part in his journey those twelve years ago at NCAT!

We all look forward to seeing what’s next for Wade. You can keep an eye out on what he is doing on his website wadejeffree.com or on instagram @wadejeffree

NCAT CREATE 17 EXHIBITION 'FOUND'

© Image: Aylsa McHugh, 'Untitled No1'
'Found' is an exhibition of work by 2017 graduates of Northern College of Art and Technology's Create course.

Each Create artist brings with them a wealth of previous study, working life and personal experience and this is reflected in the depth and breadth of the work produced.

The 28 artists forming the Create 17 collective have explored feminism, motherhood, health and the human body, Australian landscape and environmental sustainability across a broad range of media. Sitting together in the studio, artists shared stories of searching for home and belonging, in new places, new careers, and in creative communities. The work spans from memories of childhood to recent experiences of mothering, caring for ageing parents and dispatching stereotypes.

The show opened on Friday 9th February 6-9pm at Neon Parlour, a multi-purpose creative space in inner Melbourne's Thornbury. It was opened by NCAT Create Program Leader, Tracy Paterson
